Two versions are available: One is 142 minutes long and brings up the appropraite inter-title at the same moment as it appears in the film. The second version is compressed, with one minute of screensaver time reduced to one second of screensaver time.

Original Soundtrack LP for The Shining, released in 1980. The album was subsequently pulled from shelves by Warner Brothers for reasons unknown, and has not been available in any official form since.

The soundtrack is composed of a mix of music by Wendy Carlos & Rachel Elkind, Gyorgy Ligeti, Béla Bartok, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Henry Hall & the Gleneagles Hotel Band.

The original LP remains available on eBay, and via various bootleg CD’s, many of which contain additional music from the film not available on the original album.

“There is a sequence looking down from the balcony with Jack at the typewriter and the fireplace in the shot. I wanted to get a full fire effect, a nice big glowing fire in the fireplace, but I didn’t want to reduce the general lighting in any way because I needed the depth of field. So I shot the scene all the way through without the fire burning, then rewound the film, killed every light on the set, lit the fire, opened the lens up to T/1.4 and shot the fire by itself – which gave me a nice glowing fire. It was something I thought would be different to do and it was worth a try anyway. But I think that’s really the only kind of ‘special effect’ we did in the camera.”

Director Stanley Kubrick hugs his daughter, Vivian, at their home, Abbots Mead, during the filming of The Shining. Vivian later wrote the score for Full Metal Jacket, using the pseudonym “Abigail Mead”, a play on the name of her childhood home.

The Kubrick family home was only 1-½ miles from Elstree Studios, where The Shining was filmed.
